Salvador Campos with family
The Campos family crossed the border into the U.S. around 1922 and settled in Carpinteria in 1928. The members distinguished themselves and contributed to the Carpinteria community in a variety of ways. Some had historical significance. The patriarch of the family, Santiago, played a key role in the building of St. Joseph’s Church in 1934.
The family of Santiago and Trinidad Campos was photographed at a border crossing station circa 1922. With them are their children, from left to right: Leonidas, Francis, David, and Louis. Louis was recognized for bravery in WWII, earning a Bronze Star and Purple Hearts in the European theater of the war. The youngest sibling, Salvador, was born in Boyle Heights, California, four years later in 1926.
